What can i say about the people of Uzbekistan…I think the moment we landed in Uzbekistan, we were upgraded to celebrity status.
People of Uzbekistan are crazy about Indians especially because of the Bollywood influence. Wherever we went, we were requested for photos, people were so eager to talk to us and know more about India. People on the roads, hotels, and even the visa and police officers had one line when they saw us – “Aah…Raj Kapoor, Shahrukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan. It seemed like they were suffering from some Bollywood plague. There was this one incident in Registan Square, Samarkand, where we had just visited the place and were standing outside. There was some event going on and some local news channel were filming the event. Suddenly a group of youngsters come to us and start talking passionately about Bollywood, India. A cameraman, who was standing nearby was filming Registan Square. Suddenly the camera turns towards us and he starts filming us. The celebrity status just kept on elevating during our short stay in Uzbekistan.
We tried musk melons on the way to Samarkand and we started drooling after taking one bite. It was definitely the best musk melons I ever had. And the man who was selling the melons, was again as usual crazy about India. When he saw us, he started singing, “Aah Hindustani, mera joota hai Japani.” His obsession with India was at a different level. My friend wanted to wipe his face after eating the melons, so he removed a new towel from his suitcase. As he was removing the cover, this man came running towards us, collected that cover, and started shouting in joy – “Hindustan Hindustan.” He folded that cover nicely and kept it as a memento. A kind of obsession I had never seen in my life.
I think it is the people of a place or a country that make it beautiful. It doesn’t matter if the landscape isn’t that scenic or eye-catching…if the people of that place treat u well, you will always have a good impression of that place. And this was our experience in Uzbekistan. Well Uzbekistan is not much of a landscape beauty but the love that people showered upon us will always be a special memory.
