After couple of relaxing days in Nuuk, it was time to head towards the most awaited destination of Greenland – Ilulissat. I chose travel by Sarfaq Ittuq that sails from the southern most tip of Greenland to Ilulissat stopping at lot of places along the western coast. Sarfaq Ittuq run by the Arctic Umiaq Line is the best way to explore the western coast of Greenland.
Bookings can be done online through this site:
Staff on this ship is very friendly and the Greenlandic food that is served is awesome. They have a dedicated guide too, who provides information about the Greenlandic culture and also of the places that we pass by. They have a TV room, where they show a Greenlandic movie. So, there is never a dull moment during this journey. This is also a good opportunity to spot whales. Some of the locals on the ship told me they saw whales at night and I felt like kicking myself for falling asleep.
During this journey, you will pass the Arctic circle. An announcement will be made when that happens. Do remember to collect a certificate signed by the ship captain that says you have crossed the Arctic Circle. 🙂 You can get this souvenir for a small price.
Some pics from this journey:
Two hour halt at Sisimiut. Sisimiut is the second largest and the most populated town in Greenland after Nuuk. We had some time to roam around the town during the stopover.
First view of icebergs, which means we are getting closer to Ilulissat.
And in no time we were surrounded by icebergs.
I just couldn’t get enough of these icebergs. I was on the deck since early morning when I spotted the first iceberg till the time we reached Ilulissat.
They probably might be so bored of these icebergs by now 🙂
Seagulls waiting to welcome us.
A cruise ship exiting Ilulissat port.
And finally Ilulissat port
And a souvenir of this memorable journey 🙂
Though I had only two ship journeys so far but I think this one will be very special and unique.
