Landmannalaugar is one of the unique destinations of Iceland. Situated near the volcanic Hekla mountain, the different colors of rhyolite hills in Landmannalaugar are truly a spectacular sight.
I had high expectations today after being disappointed with Blue Lagoon yesterday. I wanted to visit Landmannalaugar in my first trip couple of years back but it was closed during that time. Landmannalaugar is only open during summer, which is around middle of June. From Hella, you have to take a 50km dirt road to reach Landmannalaugar. These are gravel covered F roads. I chose a day hike instead of the popular and tougher Laugavegur trek.
Some pictures from the day hike:
This region is popular for lot of hiking trails. Some of them can take up to 3-4 days. I chose 1c – Brennisteinsalda hike, which takes about two hours. This is the best hike for people who have only one day to explore this region. From all the options available for day hikes, this has the best view.
And some beauties during this hike
If you are visiting Iceland in summer, this place is a definite must in your itinerary. I wish I could have spent a couple of days more here. The roads don’t open until the middle of June. But I have heard many people say that is also one of the best places to watch the Northern Lights. I guess I have a new motivation now to visit Iceland again.
