If I had the choice of visiting only one place in this planet, then Ilulissat would be right there at the top. This paradise of icebergs has the biggest glacier outside Antarctica. With so many things to do in Ilulissat, planning your itinerary for Ilulissat is not as easy as it seems.
Camping is the best way to get close to nature but camping in a graveyard is getting a little too close to nature. This adventurous idea was not part of my itinerary for Ilulissat.
After couple of relaxing days in Nuuk, it was time to head towards the most awaited destination of Greenland – Ilulissat. I chose travel by Sarfaq Ittuq that sails from the southern most tip of Greenland to Ilulissat stopping at lot of places along the western coast. Sarfaq Ittuq run by the Arctic Umiaq Line is the best way to explore the western coast of Greenland.
After a breathtaking helicopter ride from Tasiilaq to Kulusuk, it was time to fly to the western part of Greenland. The flight from Kulusuk to Nuuk was scenic, which is usually the norm for any flight in Greenland.
This was something unplanned. Since I had saved some money from the Sermilik boat trip and accommodation, I thought of treating myself with an helicopter ride from Tasiilaq to Kulusuk.
This is the definitely the best way to enjoy the aerial views of the icebergs. I had never been on an helicopter before and was very excited about this. And it didn’t disappoint. The views were spectacular and those massive icebergs looked like tiny pieces of ice from above.
Tasiilaq (also known as Ammassalik) is the biggest town in East Greenland. This is the best place to experience the traditional Greenlandic way of life. Though, most of the homes are now more modern but there are still some homes where the old Greenlandic culture is still intact. The town is laid-back and the the people are friendly.
Tasiilaq in East Greenland has lot of hiking options. Since my stay here was just 3 days, I chose to hike to Qaqqartivagajik. If you want the best views, this is the hike that is most recommended.
Sermilik fjord is a must visit place in East Greenland. It is a one hour boat journey from Tasiilaq and the ocean is studded with so many icebergs along the way that finally you get tired of them.
The gate to East Greenland starts at the scenic Kulusuk airport. Probably, one of the world’s most scenic airports.
